Superintendent Dr. Chris Clouet told the Shelton Herald Smith was placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday, March 28, over what Clouet termed a “personnel matter.”
Clouet added that the state’s attorney office and Shelton Police Department are conducting a “criminal investigation involving multiple staff members” at the school, said the Shelton Herald.
According to Mayor Mark Lauretti and police Chief Shawn Sequeira, the investigation focuses on more than just the principal's actions in connection with an incident with two students last week.
The chief told the Herald police are investigating whether school personnel are following the proper protocols when dealing with potentially criminal situations, the Herald reported.
He would not specify further, only to say the department was called to the school for an incident involving students and would not comment on any pending arrests.
The mayor told the paper police are attempting to determine if Smith and staff members followed protocols and procedures during the incident.
In a statement released on the school’s website on Friday, March 29, Clouet said: “Please beware of rumors. (Smith) was not escorted from the building by police. There has been no arrest. Our primary concern is the well being of our students. In addition, Dr. Smith deserves respect and privacy as this process unfolds.”
Assistant Principal John Skerritt is acting principal.
